DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT: THE EU REGISTRY IS NOW LIVE. WHAT BUSINESSES NEED TO KNOW IN 2026
The Digital Product Passport has entered a new phase.
On 20 July 2026, the European Commission made the Digital Product Passport Registry operational, establishing one of the core infrastructure components of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Just days earlier, the EU had adopted the Registry's implementation rules and published the first six harmonised technical standards for DPPs. s, the message is clear: the Digital Product Passport is no longer simply a future compliance requirement to monitor. The European infrastructure is becoming operational, and companies need to start preparing their data, systems and integration processes.
What changed in July 2026
The new DPP Registry acts as the European indexing layer for Digital Product Passports.
It stores unique identifiers, registration information and high-level metadata required for the system to operate. It does not centralise all detailed product data. That information remains under the responsibility of economic operators and can be hosted either by the company itself or through a DPP service provider. a fundamental principle of the European model: the DPP infrastructure is designed to be interoperable but decentralised.
Businesses can already enrol their organisations, access the testing environment and begin testing DPP registration and management workflows. harmonised DPP standards are now available
On 14 July 2026, the European Commission published Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1736, introducing six harmonised standards supporting the Digital Product Passport infrastructure.
They cover:
data exchange protocols;
unique identifiers;
data carriers;
data storage, archiving and persistence;
APIs for DPP lifecycle management and searchability;
system interoperability.
Compliance with these harmonised standards provides a presumption of conformity with the corresponding technical requirements under Articles 10 and 11 of the ESPR. s, Europe is now defining not only what information a Digital Product Passport should provide, but also how different systems should exchange and manage that information.
The first major deadline: Battery Passports in February 2027
One of the first mandatory applications will be the Digital Battery Passport.
From 18 February 2027, an electronic Battery Passport will be required for:
electric vehicle batteries;
light means of transport batteries;
industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh.
The passport will contain both battery-model information and data relating to the individual battery, with different access levels for the public, authorities and authorised value-chain participants. work will then continue to expand progressively to additional product categories through sector-specific legislation under the ESPR. Waiting for the final sector-specific deadline before starting a DPP project may mean having to change ERP systems, production processes, databases, data governance and customer-facing interfaces at the same time.
Preparation can begin much earlier.
Companies can already:
map existing product and supply-chain data;
identify missing information;
define responsibility for creating and updating each data point;
connect products, components, batches or individual assets with unique identifiers;
implement differentiated access rights;
prepare integrations with ERP, CRM, MES, PLM and other enterprise systems;
ensure that changes and lifecycle events remain traceable and verifiable.
A Digital Product Passport is therefore not simply a QR code attached to a product.
It is a data infrastructure that needs to follow the product throughout its lifecycle.
