THE DIGITAL BATTERY PASSPORT IS NOW A REALITY: THE EU FOCUSES ON TRACEABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY

With the entry into force of EU Regulation 2023/1542, the European Union has officially launched the Digital Battery Passport (DBP)—one of the first concrete applications of the broader Digital Product Passport (DPP) framework.

Behind QR codes and transparency requirements lies a deeper challenge: how to ensure data integrity and traceability across the entire supply chain.

For those who have been working for years in digital certification, the answer is clear: blockchain.

WHAT IS THE DIGITAL BATTERY PASSPORT?

The Digital Battery Passport is a digital “record” associated with every industrial battery over 2 kWh, including batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and light mobility (such as e-bikes).

It contains critical information about:

  • the origin of raw materials,
  • chemical composition,
  • usage and reuse,
  • maintenance and end-of-life management.

The passport will be accessible via a QR code engraved on the battery or its packaging and will become mandatory by 18 February 2027.

WHY IS BLOCKCHAIN THE RIGHT TECHNOLOGY FOR THE DIGITAL BATTERY PASSPORT?

The Regulation requires that digital passports:

  • be immutable and traceable,
  • guarantee data integrity,
  • remain accessible even if the manufacturer ceases operations,
  • prevent improper use of data by third parties.

In an ecosystem where data must last for years and move across multiple actors in the supply chain, blockchain is the only technological infrastructure capable of delivering trust without relying on a central intermediary.

NOTARIFY AND THE VALUE OF A BLOCKCHAIN-BASED DBP

Notarify has been working for years to certify, track, and preserve high-trust data on public blockchains.

With the Digital Battery Passport, we provide a platform fully aligned with European requirements that:

  • links each battery to a certified registry accessible via QR code,
  • enables differentiated access levels (e.g. manufacturers, customers, authorities),
  • protects data through timestamping and blockchain notarization,
  • ensures compliance, auditability, and interoperability with other Digital Product Passports (fashion, electronics, and more).

THE FUTURE IS TRACEABLE, DECENTRALIZED, AND SUSTAINABLE

The Digital Battery Passport is far more than a smart label—it marks the beginning of a new infrastructure for industrial trust.

In this context, blockchain is not a futuristic option, but the most coherent technological foundation aligned with European principles of sustainability, transparency, and shared responsibility.

At Notarify, we believe that every product should have a certified, immutable digital memory. Blockchain is the only tool capable of making this possible.
